Introduction
Under this project, I was provided with some inspirations client already had and I was tasked with designing a project based upon that. The main goal was to design a fully modular holding stand for various VR controllers. The bottom grid was to be used as moveable joints.
Challenges
- Dimensional Accuracy to properly hold Quest 3
- Design of snap joints so that the base and the top sections are completely modular
- The holder for Quest 3 Headset should be able to structurally withstand the load of headset while maintaining its rigidity
- The Pistol based controller should be able to slide smoothly in and out

Remedies
- Using 3d scans of actual Headset, I was able to match the quest’s dimensions
- I designed a hexagonal grid on the base plate with matching pegs on under each component. The tolerance in such case was of particular issue which was determined with trial and error.
- Initially, one might go for intricate mechanisms to properly secure the holder, but I wished something simple and effective, so I designed a cap on top of the stem that pushed everything in place. 4
- The smooth sliding motion was hard to achieve since I had no 3d scans of actual product. I ended up using scale photo of the product, this was particularly challenging, but in the end, through trial and error and perseverance, It did finally worked. I ended up getting 3d scans after the work was finished, so I used the scans to further refine the model.
