Press Machine

Introduction

I was assigned a task to create a CAD Model of a press machine. I was provided with general requirements in terms of height, width and other such parameters. The purpose of machine was to press some thin metallic sheets with simple carved out patterns on a metal dye.

Tasks

I was instructed by client to make mechanism in such a way that the parts are either available at a hardware store or can be easily available at machining workshops. The main tasks here were

  1. Design should be modular and easily repairable.
  2. The parts should be easily available.
  3. A single render for showcasing purposes.

Design Process

Figure 1 Rack and Pinion Mechanism

To begin with, I chose SolidWorks given the industrial nature of this project. I chose rack and pinion mechanism after some consultations with client as to how he wishes to use this machine and how thick metallic sheets he is going to use. For pinion, we decided to use 12 teeth and 1 inch pitch diameter standard and its corresponding rack. I designed a handle loading mechanism which was fairly simple.

Results

In the end, I designed a fully functional pressing machine with simple mechanism as per requirements. I made the render using industry standard Keyshot renderer.
